Guide to Resell Rights

The term “resell rights” is a term that is commonly used in the areas of software and ebooks, often in the field of online marketing. The basic principle of resell rights is managing how your content appears and how it is maintained from the standpoint of allowing customers to alter the product. An ebook or software sold with a resale rights package would require a user or customer to contact the author of the package to request changes or updates.
There are several variations of resell rights. The first is what is known as normal resell rights or “resale rights”. With these rights, a customer is allowed to sell it to another customer with stipulations that protect you as the author of the material. You can ensure that a portion of the product’s sale profit are returned to you, or you can set the resale price on the item. When your customer sells it to another person, however, it can be stipulated that they can sell it only with personal use only rights. This will prevent your customer from allowing the distribution of the product without paying profits back to you.
Master resell rights are another form of resell rights. With master resell rights, you can sell the product to your customer and grant your permission for that customer to sell it to further customers. These rights are transferable, and can allow for the maximum distribution of your material. It’s best to talk with a professional about which option is right for your business.
Private label resell rights are a third type. They stipulate that the product can be sold and edited, as long as the work continues to be attributed to you or your company. This is similar to rebranding rights, where the customer has the ability to change the software or ebook to suit their needs. The main difference is that with rebranding rights, the client does not have to attribute you as the main author. This allow customers to resell the same product as their own, with their name, logos and changes. This is common in software sales, especially in databases, point of sale packages and in commercial sales packaging.
